I wrote a little blog in 2015 calling on the 15,000 sports students to take ownership of their future. The reality was and is that not all of those entering into university level sports courses with dreams of working for Real Madrid or with Dina Asher-Smith will have their dreams come true. There is a statistical mismatch to those that hope and the jobs available, confounded further by the fact that the vast proportion of those graduates are not skilled to work in performance sport, i.e. they’re not employable.
Recent months have taught us one thing. You can’t plan for the future with any certainty. But if you can cast your mind to your wiser future self, almost certainly the lesson will be that we need to be more adaptable. Everything has had to change, shops, transport, forms of greeting and certainly education.
There seems to be three main options to facing the professional challenge of the crisis;
- Lick your wounds, hibernate and wait for the storm to pass. This could be accompanied with a freedom to waft with the wind, let your hair down, chill!
- Heighten your senses, raise the concern levels to alert, tune into every opinion, news item, trending topics. This could be accompanied with anxiety aroused so that you’re fully informed, aware of the concerns but unfortunately responding to them all!
- Go about building the skills, experience and mindset that are almost certainly going to be relevant in the future. This approach is readying yourself for what will be one of the most common questions at interview for the next year, “What did you do during lockdown?”
